Norton welcomed local rivals, Walcot, to Norton Down intending to put last week’s disappointment behind them.

But the first few minutes didn’t go as planned and playing up the hill, an early penalty let Walcot take a 3–0 lead. The home side soon found their rhythm and set up camp in the Walcot half; this pressure allowed scrum half, Blackmore, to score the first try of the day. Centre, Richard Martin, stepped up to carry out the kicking duties for the day and slotted his first conversion.

The team now committed everything to attack with strong runs from forwards Matthews, Rose and Button, giving the team good field position. Unfortunately, a small error allowed Walcot to turn the ball over, and they ran the length of the field to score under the Norton posts giving them a 10–7 lead.

The back line now joined in carrying the ball with Holmwood, Martin and Rowles making metres but it was number eight, Gimson, who came the closest to scoring but the referee adjudged he had been stopped illegally and awarded a penalty try. This score took Norton into half-time with a 14–7 lead with the slope and wind in their favour for the next forty minutes.

With the added advantage of the elements, Norton soon took control of the half with all aspects of the set piece working well. Tries started to come with the forwards and backs sharing the four tries equally.

With Jamie Rose and Captain, Tom Fear, scoring for the forwards and Alex Mitchard and Jack Rowles for the backs, this quickly moved the score on to 40–7 putting the team in an unassailable lead.

Walcot finished the game strongly, but Norton’s well organised defence held firm and saw the second half out, denying Walcot any further points.

Richard Martin capped a fine game in the centre, with five out of six kick conversions.
