Mendip's topsy-turvy season drew to a close on Saturday with a suitably tumultuous game against Salisbury. The visitors took the lead twice, but were unable to sustain their momentum, as the game petered out and the points were shared.
Player of the Match, Sarah Hall, put Mendip ahead early on, working a neat one-two with Meg Adams to slot home a penalty corner. Salisbury replied immediately with a strong run down the left and a shot that deflected high into the Mendip goal.
Mendip's play for the remainder of the half lacked fluency, with individuals working hard, but few sustained phases of possession.
Retiring Coach, Alan Hall, gave the team some much- needed inspiration at half-time and his words proved effective almost instantly. Positive defending from centre back, Anna Swift, allowed Mendip to attack from deep, with Sarah Hall feeding Charlene Vranch, who fired home to put Mendip back in front. As in the first half, Salisbury struck straight back, forcing a penalty corner and unleashing an excellent strike from the top of the D.
Both sides had chances to win the game late on, but the defences had the final word, earning Mendip one more point to ensure a very creditable second place in East Division.
As the league season draws to a close, Mendip would like to thank Alan for all his time, effort, expertise and wisdom during his eleven years as Coach and wish him well for the future. Thanks also go to Midsomer Norton Rugby Club, who have supplied some excellent post-match refreshments in the second half of the season.
Mendip return to action in the annual Summer League tournament which begins on Wednesday, 7th May. The club will also be hosting summer training for new players. Please see the club website for further details.
