Somer AC members have again been busy on the race scene, with five members competing in the River Avon 10k trail race on 24th February in unseasonably warm weather, which added to the challenge.

Sam Perry was first Somer AC member home in a time of 48.09, and the first lady home was Claire Fennell, in a time of 53.40. Other members taking part were Ben Gait (MV40; 48.32), Rachel McEntee (VF40; 1.04.16) and Vicki Gait (VF40; 1.15.47).

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Peter Green defied his jetlag. After 24 hours of travel, with a lack of sleep and well over 20c difference in temperature, to compete in the Wellington ‘Around the Bays’ Half-Marathon on 17th February, Peter finished in 63rd position overall from a field of 1,600 runners, and was second MV50 with a time of one hour and 28 minutes.

Many members of Somer AC also took part in the ‘Wobbler’ cross-country social run on 17th February. This third race in the Winter Wobbler handicap series had a choice of three miles or 5.5 miles around the footpaths, fields and lanes of Shoscombe. The Wobbler races are unusual in that runners predict their time of finishing; the winners being those that finish closest to their predicted time (no watches allowed!).

Somer AC is your local England Athletics-affiliated running club, and we cater for people of all abilities interested in running and training together. We meet at Norton Hill sports centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.15 p.m. All are welcome! Visit: www.somerac.org.uk for more information.
