Last Saturday was a bit of a washout for Midsomer Norton Cricket Club. The First and Second XI fixtures got underway, but were not completed and the Third XI lost at Avonside CC. The Sunday Firsts, though, did win a close game against Bath by one wicket.
Sunday's better weather meant that a fixture to celebrate the landmark birthdays of a trio of MNCC stalwarts and raise funds for a good cause, went ahead as scheduled at Midsomer Norton Cricket Club's Withies Lane ground.
An MNCC Invitation XI, including Skipper, Graeme King, and Phil Mortimer (who both recently reached sixty years of age) and Paul Justin (fifty-years-old), scored 140–2 in their allotted overs. In response, a Select XI, Skippered by Midsomer Norton Methodists' Jim Eyles and including Henry Thomas and Iain Morrison, finished on 136–2, just a handful of runs short of their target.
For much of the first innings, there were three Kings on the field as MNCC Skipper, Graeme King, called on the services of his father, Chas, to open the bowling and his son, David, took to the field for the Jim Eyles' XI.
A great tea, including a special combined 170th birthday cake for Graeme, Phil and Paul, was prepared by Julie Justin, Sue Mortimer, Sarah King and others and Martin Cox sweated over the barbecue. A good crowd enjoyed the food, refreshments and the exciting finish to the match, so many thanks to all those who helped raise well over £100 for a CAFOD-managed water project.
This weekend, Midsomer Norton CC's First XI welcome Bedminster to Withies Lane. The Second XI travel to Burbage and the Third XI visit Oldfield Park CC.
