Welton's good run of form continued at West Clewes last Saturday, when they made it seven league wins on the trot with a comfortable victory over their visitors from Wiltshire.
It was Westbury who had the first effort of the game, when a shot from Jordan Matthews went well wide of the target. After that, it was all Welton as the home side pressurised the Westbury defence with numerous fast flowing attacks. Anthony Conradi broke through and just as he lined up his shot, the ball stuck in the heavy ground and was eventually cleared. Good work from Ryan Allen saw him set up Chris Peck, but, again, the ball held up and the Captain scuffed his shot.
It was all Welton and Conradi's square pass found Allen free right in front of the goal, but his shot flew straight into the arms of the grateful Westbury keeper, Callum Hotine. A twenty-yard shot from Tom Pawley tested Hotine, but the keeper did well to keep it out. Welton continued to press and further efforts from Pawley and Allen went close to breaking the deadlock. Right on the stroke of half-time, the all-important goal arrived. Steve Bridges found Conradi in space on the right with a neat pass and the Welton striker made no mistake as he drilled the ball into the Westbury net to give Welton a deserved half-time lead.
The second half saw more of the same from Welton, with Dan Cottle and Allen causing the Westbury defence problems with their pacey attacks. Bridges then broke through and his cracking shot was palmed away by Hotine. In the 66th minute, Welton got the all-important second goal with a top drawer, individual goal from Bridges. He tore straight at the Westbury defence, which seemed to part like the Red Sea for Moses, and with the target right in front of him, he unleashed an unstoppable effort that flew into the Westbury net. Good play by Michael Jones saw his shot fly into the side netting and substitute, Mark Reynolds, saw his first-time effort rock the Westbury post.
Welton were attacking on full throttle and good play by Ricky Scott saw his shot land on the roof of the net. A minute later, young Dan Cottle's first-time strike hit the inside of the Westbury post. With virtually the last play of the game, Welton got a deserved third goal when another flowing attack was finished off in style by Reynolds.
This win moved Welton up to third place in the league and all at West Clewes are looking forward to making the short trip to Southfields, at Radstock, on Boxing Day for the local derby with Radstock Town, kick-off at 12.30 p.m.
