That’s 30 hours of playing continuous Croquet at Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club! At 1 p.m. on 6th August, local Peasedown resident, Patrick Knight, started out on his epic journey to beat his previous record of playing croquet, continuously, for 24 hours.
He was ably supported by a continuous stream of club members who joined in over the next 30 hours, yes, even at 2 in the morning, people were there to challenge Patrick to yet another game of Croquet.
Having heard of Patrick’s exploits last year, there were even players from other clubs who came to take part. Even at 3 a.m., two brothers from Nailsea were playing this fascinating game – Croquet players are a real sporting ‘crowd’.
Patrick was allowed short comfort breaks and his meals arrived at regular intervals – but his concentration was on beating his previous record.
By evening, a series of spotlights were installed so play could continue – well some parts were a bit on the dark side and the dark coloured balls had to be exchanged for lighter coloured ones, so players could see what they were doing!
The sky began to get light and then, after what seemed only a few minutes, the dawn arrived in all its beauty. Players looked up at this sight – and then got back to the matter in hand – beating the 24 hours record.
During the next day, more club members arrived to cheer Patrick on and to challenge him to his next game. By 7 p.m., after over 30 hours continuous play, Patrick rested on his laurels and was cheered by club members who had come to congratulate him.
After a long, well earned rest, Patrick was back at the club to play this fascinating game – but why did he do it? All this, not only exceed last year's achievement, but gained funding for the club to support future developments. People paid to play with Patrick, not forgetting the many people who had sponsored him in his quest.
Now Croquet is a game for everyone – young or not so young, ladies and gents; if you are not as fit as you used to be – give Croquet a try. It’s a game you can play socially or competitively and tactics, not strength, invariably wins the day.
