Tomahawks faced old rivals Saturn on Saturday in what promised to be a close game.
Having beaten Saturn at the start of the season, the squad took to the court confidently, matching Saturn goal for goal as both teams found their feet after the Christmas break. Quick passing from Jade and Caron into shooters Cheryl and Davina ensured that the team pressured Saturn’s defence until they could no longer hold Davina back under the shooting circle to win the quarter 12 – 16.
During the second quarter, the team mixed up the pace slowing down their centre court speed while picking up the pace into the shooting circle, this enabled Cheryl and Davina to find space under the post with accurate passing from Jade and Darby to convert well deserved turnovers from defence into goals. As Saturn began to fade, Tomahawks applied the pressure to lead 25 – 31.
The third quarter witnessed Laura, Victoria and Kirsty tighten their control on Saturn’s attack, with Laura pressurising her WA’s centre pass drives and Victoria doubling back with Kirsty to pressurise the ever strengthening GS. The change in play caused Saturn to misjudge their passing for Tomahawks to intercept passes as they reduced the number of costly mistakes made in the first half to pull ahead 35 – 42.
The game was far from over in the final quarter as Saturn made an amazing comeback, successfully scoring with every attacking drive reducing Tomahawks lead to 2. However, the team retained their composure, continuing to push forward scoring from every opportunity. With experience on their side, they had the confidence to play the ball between themselves as the clock ticked down holding Saturn off with Victoria intercepting their final chance of a centre pass for Caron to quickly move the ball down the court for Davina to score winning 54 – 58.
