Norton Radstock Amateur Boxing Club had another ‘first’ at the weekend, this time boxing in the Western Counties Final of the NABGCs.

The honour of this landmark fell to Cameron Walker against an experienced boxer from Weston Warriors, Alfie Olive.

The drama was set right from the start, as Cameron used his strength and body shots to wear down his more talented opponent. Walker had plenty of success in all three rounds, forcing the pace, but in the end, a close split decision against him is what decided the winner.

Head Coach, Sean Jenkins, said: “For the second time in two opponents, Cameron was up against it, but as with his previous bout, he gave 110% and worked hard for three rounds, pushing Alfie backwards throughout. Although we knew what we were up against, I’m proud of Cameron and his determination to succeed, despite the gulf in experience.

“At the end of the day, it’s all experience for him and it will serve him well. The pressure of championship bouts is over now, so I can match Cameron with more suitable opponents and get him back to winning ways.”

Assistant Coach, Katy Simmons, said: “Due to how the championships are set up, Cameron would not normally be matched against someone of Alfie’s record, but you just have to get on with it. But I was honoured to work in Cam’s corner to watch him push his opponent hard like he did.”

Sean added: “The last couple of weekends have been historically important for the club, with Katy being the first female to box for the club, and now having Cameron boxing well in a Final for the first time, means that the club is moving in the right direction. For a club as small as ours, it is an exciting time to be Head Coach, and I’m proud of every boxer wearing the club colours.”
