Sunday saw the club almost completely booked out with an Avalon League match, the first Stragglers match of the season and the Captain’s Monthly Roll Up starting one after the other.
The first Avalon game of the season proved to be a difficult day against a strong Worlebury Royals team, with only Chris Gladwell and John Parkhouse bringing home a victory in a 3½ to 1½ defeat.
The Stragglers’ played the home leg of their annual Swells Trophy against Saltford. All of the matches were really tight – the Captains’ match came down to the last putt on the last green and Wells edged it, having never been ahead at any stage in the game. The overall result was 4–1 to Wells and here’s to the second leg at Saltford in three weeks’ time.
The Captain’s Monthly Roll-Up has been suspended during the last two years because of COVID restrictions. The inaugural 2022 event was won on countback by the Ladies’ Captain, Katrina Foote and David Hayward, who donated their prize money to the Captains’ charity, St. Margaret’s Hospice.
Jill Bocquet and Tina Davies represented Wells in the first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition against Taunton & Pickeridge and the pairs were all square after 18 holes. Tina and Jill won the match on the 19th hole and the next round is a local derby against Mendip. Good luck, Wells Ladies!
