Wells ladies interclub league team played the final fixture of the season away at Wedmore and drew 3½-3½.

This was the team’s first season in division one and the draw should be enough to keep them there. The September ladies’ medal competition was won by Christine Jukes with a nett 67. This week also saw the ladies compete against the men for the hobby horse and after much cheering and jeering the ladies won 5½- 1½.

A Grand Day Out was had by the Senior Men at Shirehampton. Nick Poore had to play alone due to a late withdrawal by a Wells player and did very well to take his match to the 16th. Steve Bocquet and Alan Hayes drew, another one coming up against home players in form, losing 4 and 3. Pete Leverick and Steve Dent nearly came unstuck and won the last 4 holes to record an excellent last hole win. Phil Spring and Geoff Spinks confounded their opponents with chip-ins and sinking putts from off the green in a very close game.

Dave Hayward and Trevor Jones, giving shots, played very well together to record an excellent 4 and 2 victory, and were able to marvel at their 91-year-old opponent playing well on the hilly course, without a buggy, enjoying his pints and meal afterwards. This was bettered by Paul Hole and John Moxons 4 & 3 victory, with the opposition marvelling at the length of Paul’s drives, which on this occasion were straight. Ian Mills and Tony Duffin lost 5 and 4 , a result compensated by 87-year-old Ian hammering a driver onto the last green to within four feet and snatch winning nearest the pin from their watching captain, who had landed on the green for the first time in months.

In other matches the mixed team lost at Mendip 5 ½ - ½ and the Stragglers succumbed away at Worlebury 5-0.

Charlie Sheppard won the Junior competition with 48 points and Dan Staples won Club Night with a 12 hole score of 27 points on countback from Andrea Staples, which probably led to quite an interesting conversation.
