Welton gained three valuable points with a good, all-round team performance to defeat their visitors from South Somerset.
The game got underway on a cracking spring afternoon with warm sunshine and the pitch, that only two weeks ago was caked in mud, had dried out completely. Early pressure from Welton saw Anthony Conradi win a corner. Ryan Gay's curling corner crashed against the Wellington bar, with the keeper beaten.
Welton Captain, Chris Peck, then saw his effort go wide of the visitor's post as Welton pressed for the opening goal. Cottle then let loose a rasping shot from 25 yards out that had goal written all over it until Wellington keeper, Jake Viney, pulled off an outstanding save to deny Welton. However, with ten minutes gone, Welton deservedly took the lead when a corner from the right was met by Byron Lismore, who headed the ball into the mix where it was met by Paul Banks, who thumped his shot into the Wellington net.
Welton didn't rest on their laurels and a glancing header from Ritchie Chandler went close. It was all Welton, with Conradi's close-range shot blocked on the line by the keeper and Viney then pulled off another top-drawer save when he pushed Cottle's quality free kick from the edge of the area onto the post and out. Wellington's first attack of the game saw a shot from Alex Piper flash past the Welton post. Further good play from Welton saw Tom Smith set up Conradi, who was through on goal but his shot was again saved well by the keeper.
The second half began with an early chance for the visitors, when Oliver Chamberlain set up Liam Cleal with a clear view of goal, but his shot was saved by Andy King in the Welton goal. Welton continued to press and good play by Cottle saw his effort cleared by the Wellington defence and Ben Harris broke through and attacked the Wellington goal, only to shoot wide of the target.
The visitors looked lively in the second half and a gem of a corner from Piper was met by Wellington Captain, Tom Ellis, and his bullet header crashed against the Welton bar.
This scare woke Welton up and Conradi saw another shot well saved by Viney and a header from Peck went inches wide of the Wellington post. In the end, Welton looked comfortable with their lead and when the referee blew the final whistle, the Green Army went home quite contented with the three points.
