Norton Radstock Amateur Boxing Club had two representatives boxing at a recent show held in Weston-super-Mare. Young Cameron Walker was up against home boxer, Mason Stewart, who had a slight height and reach advantage.
Boxing very intelligently, with lots of head movement and defensive skills, and taking a lot of his opponent’s shots on his arms and gloves, Walker timed his attacks as Stewart was backing off with great success.
As his opponent started to tire half-way through the second round, Walker stepped up his attacks, landing clean shots throughout. Entering the third round with plenty left in the tank, Walker’s fitness proved vital as Stewart was visibly tiring, and his own work becoming very scrappy. At the conclusion, it was felt amongst most of the watching crowd that Cameron was a worthy winner, and so did the judges, giving Walker a unanimous decision.
Top of the bill was a Senior bout, featuring Rhys Higgins against Elijah Carrol of Chepstow ABC. After three entertaining rounds of two well-matched boxers, it was decided by all three judges that Carrol had done enough to take the decision, but not before being pushed hard by Higgins, who gave his all in a bout that had the home crowd applauding in appreciation.
Accompanied by his new female Coach, Katy Simmons, Head Coach Sean Jenkins talked about the positives Rhys could take away from his defeat: “I was impressed with his attitude and his work rate tonight, and his reluctance to take a backward step against a strong lad. A defeat in the amateur game is not the end of the world – the best way to deal with it is to take the positives out of it and move on to the next bout.
“Rhys felt he could have done more throughout the three rounds and wants to improve on things. With a few additions coming through the ranks for next season, the club is on the up!”
