AN investigation is underway after “disorder” saw four police officers assaulted in Midsomer Norton.

Officers for Avon and Somerset Police attended a gathering of an estimated 200 young people off Withies Lane at about 8.30pm on Friday, May 23, after multiple reports were received of anti-social behaviour.

While attempting to engage with the group, the officers were reportedly assaulted by a small number of people, being pushed, punched and spat at.

Further officers attended and three teenagers, aged 13, 15 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. They have since been bailed.

A Section 35 dispersal notice was issued covering Midsomer Norton and was kept in place as of Saturday, May 24. Officers were also carrying out extra patrols in the area on the day following the incident.

Officers can issue this notice so long as they have reasonable grounds to suspect that the behaviour has contributed to or is likely to contribute to members of the public being harassed, alarmed or distressed, or the occurrence of a crime or disorder.

It was later reported that no serious injuries were sustained by the officers and there were no injuries to any member of the group.

PCSO Supervisor Katie Allwood-Coppin said: "The majority of people in attendance last night were there to celebrate the end of their exams and were fully co-operative with officers.

"However, officers were faced with disgraceful violence by a small number of the group. While their injuries were thankfully relatively minor, that hostility and aggression should not have to be endured.

"We will not tolerate this behaviour and the impact it has on the community. We would urge parents and carers to make sure they know where their children are and who they're with.”

An investigation is underway and anyone with any information is asked by police to call 101, using the reference number 5225144608.
