The office of Wera Hobhouse MP has released a statement following the PM’s resignation last week: ‘Liz Truss has resigned and will become the shortest serving Prime Minister in British history. Bath MP Wera Hobhouse is demanding a General Election now as the only way to stop the chaos that is enveloping the Conservative party and the country.

‘In her exceptionally brief time in office, Liz Truss utterly failed in every aspect of her policy agenda. Her record in Government includes: the announcement of a disastrous ‘growth plan’ which actively went out of its way to exacerbate inequality and cause, in her words, ‘disruption’; the IMF making an unprecedented intervention to try and persuade the Government to reverse course; the Bank of England stepping in to rescue pension funds on the brink of collapse due to her mini-budget; inflation reaching a 40-year high at 10.1%; sterling hitting its lowest level ever against the dollar; interest rates reaching their highest levels since 2009, putting hundreds of pounds a month on people's mortgages; the sacking of her Chancellor; a return to austerity; the resignation of her Home Secretary; the bullying and manhandling of her own MPs; and the most humiliating set of u-turns in British political history.

‘This all happened within the space of forty five days.

‘The defenestration of yet another Conservative Prime Minister in short order lays bare the dysfunctionality of the Conservative party as a whole. Ms Hobhouse and the Liberal Democrats recognise that the only way through to some semblance of normality and stability is a General Election and the removal of the Conservatives from power.

Wera Hobhouse, Bath MP, commented: “This will be the first time since 1834 that we have had three Prime Ministers in a year. The Conservatives will have given us five in the last six years. This kind of upheaval and turmoil is not normal and we should not accept it as normal.

“A fundamental change is needed and that can only be achieved with a General Election. Conservative Prime Minister after Conservative Prime Minister has held this country back and as a result, ordinary people are suffering.

“It is an insult for the Conservatives to try and impose another unelected leader on a public that is so clearly tired of this carousel of chaos. They need to recognise that their time is up, consider the national interest and not just their own personal selfish ambitions, and call an election.”

Metro Mayor Dan Norris is of a similar opinion, telling The Journal: “Liz Truss has made the right decision. But the damage she has caused will take years to fix.

“As Metro Mayor, the record inflation we are seeing means I am losing spending power every single day. Changing the Chancellor, the Home Secretary and now the Prime Minister still just doesn’t cut it.

“We need a general election as soon as possible and to stop being seen as a banana republic and the basket case of Europe”.
