The Bath Welcomes Regugees group, set up to help resettled families fleeing civil war in Syria, threw a party for one family to celebrate their youngest child being discharged from hospital.

The one-year-old toddler had been seriously ill in the RUH since his family arrived in the UK in March.

The family are just some of the 25 refugees rehomed in Bath and North East Somerset.

The child’s mother explained how the family had to flee their home due to intense fighting and that she had to give birth while on the run. Her son had been born with an abnormal oesophagus, but the family could not afford hospital bills and had turned to the UNHCR for help before being rehomed in the UK. Since arrival, her son has been cared for at the RUH and has undergone an operation to correct his condition.

As part of Bath Welcomes Refugees’ fundraising efforts, one member, Lucy Al, is planning a 100 mile sponsored cycle ride from Caldicot in Wales to Hungerford in

Berkshire. To find out more or to support her, visit: www.
