AN APPEAL has been launched for tree planting sites to be made available to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day next January.
Coordinated by the B&NES Faith Foundation, events are expected to be held across the district with a range of organisations involved.
Director of the Faith Foundation, Nathan Hartley, said: “As we approach the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, the largest Nazi death camp during the Second World War, our team are always looking at ways in which we can educate and share with the public just how horrific the atrocities of 20th century Europe were.
“Today, there is increasing division in communities across the UK and in particular we’re seeing the unpleasant rise of antisemitism again. Now more than ever, we need to stand together and in solidarity remember the atrocities of the Holocaust.”
The Faith Foundation, in partnership with local schools, B&NES Council and the charity ‘More Trees for B&NES’ are looking for sites to plant over 80 trees.
“Would you like to host a tree planting event? Are you part of a community group or local business that would like to plant trees in your outdoors space? If so, please get in touch,” added Nathan.
Trees are one of the best solutions to our climate emergency. They improve poor air quality, alleviate the risk of flooding, lock up carbon, boost our wellbeing – making us feel healthier and happier, and create habitats for wildlife.

Holocaust Memorial Day will take place on Monday, January 27, marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The annual event encourages people across the UK to remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
