Emma Parker, from Peasedown St John, recently launched an appeal for book donations after spending three months volunteering in Ghana with Create Change, a charity that helps disadvantaged girls and youths gain access to education. The charity is largely run by young women who were themselves supported by Create Change, and who now continue the charity’s work by working with rural communities to improve girls’ and youth access to quality education.
Although the women at Create Change are working incredibly hard to improve girls’ access to education through their sponsorship programmes, infrastructure projects and through the literacy and community clubs they run, they are working with limited resources and are struggling, in particular, with the lack of children’s books.
Emma was motivated to ask her local community for help and following an appeal in The Journal, an overwhelming amount of local people, schools and charities kindly donated a huge number of children’s books. Emma is now raising money to pay for the postage of fifteen boxes full of books to send to the girls at Create Change in Ghana.
So, come on down to the Apple Tree Inn, Shoscombe, on Sunday, 29th January, for an evening of book-themed fun! Put your literature knowledge to the test in our book-themed quiz, be in with the chance to win prizes and help to send fifteen boxes full of locally donated books to disadvantaged girls in Ghana. Please arrive at 7.30 p.m. for an 8 p.m. start. Teams of 3–6.
If you can’t make it to the quiz, but would still like to donate and enter the competition to guess how many books have been donated, you can visit Emma’s Just Giving Page: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/SendBooks2GirlsinGhana Don’t forget to write your guess in the comments box.
Thank you, everyone, for your continued support.
