In a desperate bid to attract men to a crochet world record attempt in June, a newly-formed men’s crochet group are challenging all men to sign up.
When Chilcompton teenager, Emma Welch, died unexpectedly last June, it was thought that her fundraising activities would cease. Emma raised over £13,000 for Brain Tumour Research, despite her own health problems. In her memory, her best friend, Victoria Roberts, decided to step in and carry on her work.
Victoria decided to attempt two World Records on 4th June 2016, the first anniversary of Emma’s death, at the Bath Forum at 10.30 a.m. The first record, for the largest number of crocheted items, which currently stands at around 13,388, has been broken, as Victoria already has 15,000 and rising.
The second record is proving more difficult. It is for the most people crocheting in a single room, which is currently set at 485. This should have been the easy record to beat, as the Bath Forum seats 1,650 people.
Unfortunately, only 200 people have booked their free ticket so far and that is what has prompted Tony Welch, Emma’s father, to form a men’s group who met at the King’s Arms in Stratton-on-the-Fosse last Thursday. He says: “Why are men avoiding this? It’s a simple task. Just make a chain for fifteen minutes. No ability is required. In fact, we can teach all you need to know in five minutes before the event.
“I want to get 400 men at this event. Wouldn’t it be great if the majority of people taking part in a crochet world record attempt were men!”
If you think you are man enough for fifteen minutes of hard crocheting, find Daisy Bear on Facebook or go to: www.eventbrite.co.uk/ and put ‘crochet’ in the search field to book your free ticket. Any questions? Call the Daisy Bear hotline number: 07526 570677.
