120 water-survival boxes for displaced families following floods and mudslides in Chile have been packed up by the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge, from their base on Westfield Trading Estate, with half the consignment paid for by Rotary in Switzerland.
In addition, 120 ‘school in a bag’ rucksacks were also sent to enable the displaced children to resume their education.
The latest disaster to hit Chile devastated parts of the Atacama Region, when some 200mm fell in 24 hours (normal rainfall in the area averages 15mm a year).
As a result, homes were washed away or flooded, with contaminated water, and normal sources of safe drinking water were polluted.
The Rotary Water-Survival Box project is managed by the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge in North East Somerset.
The box is equipped with an Aquafilter that can convert 100,000 litres of contaminated water into safe drinking water. It also contains a range of essential survival items, and consignments have been sent to 53 disasters in 27 different countries during the eleven years that the charity has been operating.
Donations to help replace stock are urgently needed and cheques made out to Worldwaterworks Limited should be sent to Broadway House, Third Avenue,
Westfield Trading Estate, Midsomer Norton, BA3 4XD.
Online donations can also now be made through the website at: www.watersurvivalbox.org
