VETERANS of the Somerset Coalfield are invited to their 25th annual reunion at Radstock Museum on Monday, September 9th.
This year's event marks the fortieth anniversary of the closure of the last pits in the coalfield. Reduced national demand for coal, together with competition from more economical coalfields, led to the closure of the last two pits, Kilmersdon and Writhlington, in September 1973.
Doors will open at 11.30 a.m. and a light lunch will be served at noon.
The reunion is organised by Somerset District Miners' Welfare Trust, in association with the museum. Space is limited, so the invitation cannot be extended to family or friends of former employees of the Somerset mines.
