Norton Hill Primary School recently organised a ‘Music Week’ for their pupils to explore the subject in depth.

The Music Week provided the pupils with access to top-quality live music performances, as well as workshops and masterclasses with professional musicians. The pupils were exposed to a plethora of genres, ranging from opera to rock. Visitors included a Senior lecturer from Bath Spa University, the Director of Music from Prior Park College, the Music Department from Downside School, ‘The Pix’ (rock band) and a member of Wells Cathedral Choir.

The school is equipped with a sound-proof music room, stocked with a variety of instruments - Norton Hill Primary’s Music Week allowed their pupils to fully explore the school’s provision. The exposure to a vast range of music provided the pupils with rare musical opportunities.

Beth Roberts, Shadow Music Lead at Norton Hill Primary and organiser of the project, stated: “The aim of Music Week was to provide the children with live experiences of top-quality music making, in order to inspire the next generation of musicians. I wanted the children to discover genres of music that they may have never heard before, as well as gaining a further appreciation for the music that they listen to in every-day life.”

Norton Hill Primary’s Music Week has had support from multiple professional musicians, with Matt Nicholls, Director of Music at Prior Park College, stating: “It was fantastic to see such a well equipped primary school bucking national trends, with such an emphasis on high quality musical education, across a range of genres. It is such an important subject which teaches a multitude of skills.”

Although it is a growing school, it is clear that Norton Hill Primary School is already inspiring the next generation to pursue their passions.
