A LARGE scale emergency response was launched when a fire broke out in a second-floor flat on Marigold Road in Frome, prompting the evacuation of the entire block.
On Wednesday, December 3, crews confirmed the fire had originated in a second-floor flat and were working with multiple stations to bring it under control.
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: “Initially, three fire engines from Frome, Westbury and Trowbridge were mobilised to the flats, where smoke and flames were seen issuing from a top-floor flat and were quickly spreading.
“On arrival of our Frome crew, this was confirmed, and minutes later an assistance message was received to increase the attendance by a further two fire engines, mobilised from Warminster, to assist with firefighting, scene safety and any potential casualties.
“A command support vehicle from Street was also mobilised, together with two fire engines from Shepton Mallet and Wells later on in the incident for additional equipment and relief crews. This incident is now complete and was brought under control at 2.26am.”
The fire, the cause of which is still under investigation, reportedly originated in a second-floor flat and was extinguished by seven firefighters in breathing apparatus, using two hose reel jets and two main attack jets, both internally and externally, together with thermal imaging cameras to check for hotspots and gas detection monitors.
The spokesperson added: “This was also done internally and externally after the integrity of the building was compromised due to a partial roof collapse. The scene has now been handed over to police, but further fire investigation will recommence in daylight hours by both our fire investigation officer and police crime scene investigators.
