The planned new Norton Hill Primary School moved a step closer to opening this week, following a fast-track interview with the Department for Education.

The new school, which is needed because of rising numbers in the area, is due to open in 2017.

Executive Headteacher, Alun Williams, said: "I was very pleased to be approached by the Local Authority and planners to consider opening a new school for children in the Midsomer Norton area. I am delighted that we have been trusted to take on this responsibility and this is yet more evidence of our growing expertise across all phases of education. Having outstanding schools in the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership has really helped us prepare for the Norton Hill Primary School and I am looking forward to finalising the curriculum offer and new build."

The new school will deliver all aspect of the national curriculum and will have an additional focus on science, technology and mathematics. Outdoor education will also be a strong feature of learning taking place at the new school and will help young children develop important life skills.

The site where the school will be built has yet to be finalised and the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership is working closely with planners to reduce any impact of increased traffic in the area.
