A TRUST in Ston Easton are setting up a fundraiser in order to save the local community’s play area and sports court.
The Get Active Ston Easton Community Trust was set up by a number of local residents in order to manage the refurbishment of the unused play area and the derelict tennis court, which were then opened to the public in 2019.
The facilities are funded and managed as an independent venture, and has no direct income being raised. The trust is therefore looking to local residents and those who use the sports court and play area for support.
Funds will go towards the cost of insurance for this coming year, as well as to fund the maintenance of the sports court.
The sports court offers the opportunity to play a variety of sports for all ages, including tennis, basketball and five-a-side football.
The play area next to the sports court provides wooden play equipment surrounded by a fenced grass area.
Get Active Ston Easton say that without support from the local community, then the facilities are at risk of closing.
A statement by Get Active Ston Easton said: “Together these facilities provide a meeting place and a safe outdoors space with activities to appeal to residents of all ages. It is a valuable asset and focal point for the local community, attracting residents from Ston Easton parish and surrounding villages.
“Although a free-to-use space for everyone to enjoy – with no booking required, it is not free to run.”
The fundraiser, which runs until Monday, June 30, has raised £960 as of 11am on Thursday, June 5, just under two thirds of the way to its £1,500 target.
A family quiz night will also be held to help with fundraising, which will take place on Friday, June 20, at Ston Easton Village Hall.
