Nearly twenty acres of green space and woodland at Haydon has been secured, thanks to the quick thinking of local Councillors – and now they are asking what the community would like to see there and how it could be used in years to come.

The land, which was up for sale via auction, has been purchased to provide an amenity and leisure facility for the community, protecting and enhancing local wildlife.

The idea to purchase the land was suggested three years ago by Radstock Town Councillor, Mike Boulton, should the opportunity arise.

Arise, it did – but Councillors had to move quickly, as a decision could not be made at a full meeting before the auction. After discussions with fellow Councillors, Cllr Gary Dando bid personally for the land and paid the deposit of £4,000 using his own money to save the land being lost, which was secured at £43,000. The balance was paid after agreement of the next full Council meeting.

Both Councillors say they are committed to the development of the land for the public to use. Cllr Boulton says: “We feel that as every resident contributed to the price via the council tax precept, all should benefit. We would like to hear ideas for the development of the site for public amenity.”

Readers can send their ideas to Radstock Town Council or join them at the Annual Town Meeting, which takes place this Thursday, 25th April at Trinity Methodist Church Hall, Radstock from 6.30 p.m.
