Men’s Captain’s Day at Mendip saw an individual stableford, but with 6 holes designated as ‘Power play’ holes. These had a second hole cut in extremely difficult parts of the green, and if a player opted to go for them, then they were rewarded with double points if successful.

This made for some very interesting scoring. The winning score from Norman Squire, was 52 points with Terry Carter 2nd, with 50, Ian Hall had 48, and Derek Padley, 47.

Fifty two entered the mid week stableford. Division one went to Mark Necker with 38 points, with Rob Edney second with 37.

Division 2 saw a win for Martin Lenihan with 38, and Peter Grafton was 2nd with 35, but Division three saw the best score of the day from Dan Cottle, with 42, with Chris Bryant 2nd with 38.

95 competitors, played in the Coronation Cup. Division one, saw an excellent net 68 from 2 handicapper George Morgan, with Scott Butland 2nd with 71, after count back from Neil Onslow.

Division two was won by Alan Clarke, with sixty nine after count back from Neil Clark with Adrian Brooking Clark third, with 70 after count back.

Division three went to John Hargraves with 69, with Trevor Messenger 2nd with 70, and Neville Harvey was 3rd, with 72.

The Cup Winner was Alan Kay with 68 winning on count back. This competition was the latest in the Order of Merit, which sees Guillaume Lesage in the lead with 394 points, with Stephen Coate 2nd with 341, and Alan Clarke 3rd with 329.

The Avalon C Team, beat Cricket St Thomas 3-2, with wins for Scott Butland/Tom Black (who remain unbeaten this season), Malcolm Srawley/Paul Reakes and Chris Butland/Rob Richardson.

Nearest the Pin went to Chris Butland, Dan Allen was 2nd and Tony Taylor was 3rd.

The Ladies Alliance B Team had a fine win 9-5 over Orchardleigh, with wins for Anne Hopkins, Anita Butcher, Jo Espley, Jan Fukuyama, and a half from Jenny Merrett.

It’s great to report another fine performance from young Ffion Richardson, who has won the Scottish Girls Under 12’s Championship held at Forfar, Scotland. She had a fine 152 gross over the two rounds, just 8 over par. Another of our young stars Ellen Reakes is competing in the R & A Girls Championship, held at Carnoustie. A great experience for her.

The Mixed Team visited Long Ashton, and found the home team in fine form. They were defeated but Clive Copp, and Pippa Brown managed a win and Susy Rudkin/Tony Logan a half.

The Seniors entertained Bath, and ran out 5-1 winners. Victorious for Mendip were Simon Brand/Nigel Brokenshaw, John Ellis/Colin Davies, Steve Davis/Paul Wood, Gary Quin/Robert Miller and John Scott/David Peel.

Eighty seven Seniors played in the monthly stableford event. Division one was won by Kevin Carmody, with a fine 39 points, Alan O’Leary was 2nd with 38, and Tony Taylor 3rd with 37 after count back.

Division two saw a win for Alan Evans Jones, with a best score of the day 41 points, with Martin Lambert 2nd with 40 points, after a 5 way tie. Tony Scott was third.
