Midsomer Norton saw the opening of Forces Online last week, a new Somerset Veterans Support Centre, in Holly Court. Set up by founder, Len Chappell, who works in the area, the idea originally began in Swindon three years ago.
The non-profit organisation helps and supports veterans in any way that it can, signposting to others who may also be able to help along the way. As well as helping the military, it is hoped that it will also be able to assist those facing homelessness, welfare or mental health issues locally.
Speaking to The Journal, Mr Chappell said: “We want to help veterans across the whole of the UK – and, what began as a group chat soon made us realise that there is a serious need to help the military and their families.
“We have been using the Forces Online website and Facebook page as a place where people can go to for help, advice and support, but we have now set up a base in Midsomer Norton from which to grow the idea.
“Many don’t realise the extent of people’s problems and more needs to be done to help.”
The opening last week was attended by Vice-Chair of B&NES Council, Karen Walker, local councillors and organisations to find out more about the new centre.
Forces Online is now raising money to fully register as a British Military charity. For more information, visit www.forcesonline.org.uk
