A GROUP of people off for a good day out. Do you recognise where this photograph was taken? Better still, do you know who any of the people are?
Last month’s puzzle was a bit of a trick question. The building shown is Stratford Mill, which used to stand on the River Chew in Stratford Lane, West Harptree, which followed the line of a Roman road. The site is now under Chew Valley Lake.

However, the photo was actually taken a few years ago in the grounds of Blaise Castle, where the mill was re-erected in the 1950s after the lake was constructed. It is now a Grade II listed building. Several other items from buildings that were under the lake are in store at Blaise Castle Museum, but not on display.
The Harptrees History Society, which provides these photos, is always interested in old pictures of people, places and events in the Chew Valley and Wrington area. If you have any you would like to share, please email [email protected]
The society's autumn series of meetings is starting again this month. On Wednesday, September 24 Professor Ronald Hutton is making a very welcome return visit to examine the reasons for the English Civil War, which tore families apart in the 1640s, and why it eventually came to an end.
