It’s fair to say last week’s mystery photo went viral. Dozens of you joined the discussion on Facebook about where and when the row of terraced houses were photographed.
And there was no doubting most of you knew the answer was Victoria Terrace and Southview in Paulton.
Lyn Darling spotted “Jubilee Terrace in the background, where I lived till I was 19.”
Robin White added: “The big detached house just to the right of the boot factory was called the Woodlands. I grew up there. I remember the Dowling family. Stan and Mary Ashman lived a couple of doors away at the bottom of the hill. The row of houses in the back of the picture is Jubilee Terrace.”
Deb Dowling Smith remembers an “amazing life” there. “The house with the old garage is where my mum , dad lived I was born and bred along with my 4 sisters and 6 brothers in that house so so many beautiful memories the gravel Lane was called coal pit hill there was a field at the bottom of the hill where dobbin the horse lived and there was a cadet hut over the road too where my brothers used to go.”
Christopher Ruddock knew it was Paulton, at what he said is now the entrance to Brookside. He said: “Ashman's factory at the top on the left next to Purnell. I grew up in Paulton and can remember when Ashman's burned down. Also the old co-op there closing.”
And Stefano Marazzi remembers a Royal visit: “When Ashmans boot factory closed they set up an "Enterprise zone" and Charles came to open it. They sent all us kids from Paulton Junior school to wave flags.”
