Cqn you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

The rather grainy quality of the photography didn’t fool anybody with all recognising it as the White Hart Inn but we had a couple of different locations.

Tony Clarke was the first to get in touch with our team with his guess of the only White Hart he could think of in the area, in Midsomer Norton, previously known as The Cider House as they apparently they sold more of that. He said it’s now known as The Island in Midsomer Norton.

Mr Maurice Matthews also called the office and thought it was the White Hart in Clandown.

He said it stood at the end of a terrace of houses known as Blackers Rank, behind the houses was Clandown School and opposite the houses used to be Dennings Bakery - where as a little lad he used to go and watch them put the jam on the doughnuts!

Mystery photograph regular, Jeff Parsons, on behalf of his Trinity coffee group, got in touch to say: “We think that the picture this week is the White Hart at the eastern end of Whitehart Row, Clandown.

“We think that this name may have changed from Blacker's Row.

"I have an 1871 Census record of my great grandfather Henry Gane Rogers living at 19 Blacker's Row next to a beer house. An OS sheet around 1900 shows White Hart Row with a pub at the east end.

“There is no White Hart shown in the Somerset Kelly's of 1899 but a Mrs Shearn Beer retailer, address not shown. Then in 1935 Kelly's shows a White Hart Inn with a Mr Sperring as landlord.”

Andrew White emailed us in to say: “I believe this picture may be of the White Hart Inn, Clandown. I remember it from the 1950’s but I’m not 100 percent certain.”

Well, Andrew, you remembered correctly. It was indeed the White Hart Inn at Clandown.
