Mystery photograph: A place of worship but where?

CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

Last week’s picture seems to have had everyone stumped, including our contact at the Radstock Museum, who also had his doubts about the image.

From his information the lovely old public house was The Old Star Inn at Tunley, from around 1928. And we were looking for suggestions from our lovely readership as to whether it was really the case.

Well, after a bit of research, it seems Tunley, a village tucked away in the Somerset hills down the road from Bath, has only ever had one public house and that is the King William Inn.

According to records, the public house was the home of the local football team formed by a group of miners in 1912. They joined together to form the football team who from then gave themselves the nickname The Miners. According to Tunley AFC, the miners used the public house as a meeting place, their clubhouse and it was the heart of Tunley AFC.

With some glorious images on the Tunley AFC website, the team played in blue until in the 1940s, when a set of green and white Plymouth Argyle shirts was donated to the club by wartime actor Jack Train, a regular at the public house and today, the team plays in the same colours.

So here’s our quandary - if the King William was the Public House in Tunley and there was ever only one, then our contact at the Radstock Museum was quite right to doubt the location of the Star Inn photograph. If anyone else has any ideas, do get in touch.
