CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

Last week’s mystery photograph showed an occasion that had a lot of people clearly very excited and we asked not only where it was taken but also what was the occasion.

We had just one email from Roy Robinson who said: “This week's mystery photo is of Wellow. I remember my parents had this same photo. Somewhere in the crowd is my Mother, a young Iris Nokes, as she was in those days. She was living at Bagridge in those days.”

We had many reader’s comment on Facebook too. The crowd were all gathered to witness the opening of a new horse trough in Wellow, dated 1906.

On our Facebook page Brian Snook shared some great memories recalling happy days in the village. Pauline Preddy replied to Brian’s post: “I wondered if it was the celebrating when the granite horse trough (or Pump Trow) as we call it was put there to celebrate the Cole family who’d allowed a village water tank in one of their fields in Bath Hill to give the village a piped water supply.”

Something very exciting is happening but what, and more importantly, where?

Agreeing with Brian’s childhood memories she added: “We used to play in farmer’s barns in the school summer holidays. And Horler’s and Knights were the ones in The Square where the we’d play. Happy memories!

“I’ll bet Brian and friends played knock out ginger, string tied onto knockers; another game we’d run all over peoples gardens playing a sort of hide and seek. Possibly called Olly out! Hoping the village policeman wouldn’t catch us and use his cloak to punish us!”

Thanks again to Radstock Museum for this week’s photograph.
