Mystery Photograph: Somerset's mining heritage but where?

CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

Last week’s photo had a few confused thinking it was a repeat but it was a location we have featured before.

John Wilcox was the first to get in touch: “This is a photo of The Star pub at the top of Tunley Hill.

“I remember it in the 40’s, rode by it on the way to Timsbury Secondary Modern School.

“Pub was run by Harry Arnold, his son John was born there and lived in Tunley all his life.”

Martin Robinson emailed in: “This is the Star Inn at Tunley. It was located at the top of Tunley Hill. It was demolished approximately 70 years ago to allow the road to be widened.

“The house in the right of the photo has since been replaced with a new property of a similar design. The house in the far background is Tunley Farm House which is still there.”

As ever, we also heard from regular reader Jeff Parsons who said: “Looking at the photo you can just make out a name on the notice board fixed to the wall of one property.

“It looks like Coombs, a good starting point; Coombs Brewery was a Radstock enterprise in the later years of the 19th century.

“There were a number of properties in the area under Coombs ownership, including the Lamb at Clandown, The Railway Hotel in Wellsway, Radstock, The Talbot Inn at Keynsham and a Beer house at Tunley, in the parish of Camerton, known as The Star.

“At this time Tunley was not a separate parish and was part of Camerton.

“Looking at an Ordnance Survey map (ca. 1904) of the area covering Tunley there is a note showing BH (presumably noting Beer House) on some buildings at the far west end of Tunley just before Tunley Hill and a little higher than Tunley Farm on the opposite side of the road.”
