THIS year has been designated the National Year of Reading to try to increase the number of people, both children and adults, who enjoy reading as well as recognising its’ continuing importance in everyday life.
One step towards this is World Book Day celebrated each March in many schools where the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) places volunteers.
The volunteers work with pupils on a one-to-one basis helping them improve their reading skills, confidence, and enjoyment. Establishing solid foundations early in life benefits pupils and gives volunteers a sense of fulfilment, as their small investment of time can help to make a meaningful difference to a child's future.
One of the Primary Schools served by the RSVP is Midsomer Norton Primary. A spokesperson said: “At Midsomer Norton Primary, we believe that a school thrives when it is at the heart of its community.
“We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team, and I can say with certainty that volunteers presence makes a world of difference to both our staff and our pupils.
“One of the most impactful ways volunteers can help is by becoming a Reading Volunteer. The importance of a child reading aloud to an adult cannot be overstated.
“We appreciate all types of support. If reading isn't your niche, we have plenty of other opportunities from helping us maintain our school gardens to assisting with art projects or sharing a professional skill, every hour you give enriches the lives of our children.
“If you have some time to spare please do get in touch with the school office.
“We would love to welcome you into our school family.”
