Year 10 Writhlington student, Lucy Bush, has been awarded a Pride of Somerset Award in recognition of her passion and dedication to competitive riding.

Nominated by her coach, Anne Allen, from the RDA Wellow Trekking Centre, Lucy was invited to attend an awards ceremony in Taunton, hosted by the Rotary Club of Taunton and BBC Somerset.

Celebrating its tenth year, the Pride of Somerset celebrates young people under the age of twenty who have gone above and beyond to achieve something spectacular whether it involves sport, school, volunteer work, overcoming an illness, helping parents and grandparents or just being a great friend.

Speaking about the award, Lucy said: “It was a really amazing evening – it was formal, so everyone was in suits and beautiful dresses. I got the chance to meet some amazing and inspiring people, who also won awards. There are so many incredible things that young people are doing in their communities and really making a difference, and I am really proud to have been nominated alongside them.”

Lucy is hoping to compete at the 2020 Olympics for the GB Paralympic Riding team and trains regularly with GB Gold trainer, Nina Venables.

Writhlington School’s Executive Headteacher, Mark Everett, said: “We are incredibly proud of Lucy and all of her achievements – she is a real inspiration to other students and we can’t wait to see her flourish further in the coming years.”
