A YELLOW heat-health alert has been issued for Somerset this week, with forecasters predicting temperatures reaching up to 28°C by the weekend.

The alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency in partnership with the Met Office, runs from midday on Wednesday, June 18 until 6pm on Sunday, June 22, and covers much of southern England, including the South West.

It warns of potential health risks for vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly and those with existing medical conditions.

The conditions are likely to meet the official threshold for a heatwave, defined as at least three consecutive days of temperatures above 25°C in the region.

Public health officials are encouraging residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11am and 3pm, and to check on neighbours who may be more vulnerable. Pet owners are reminded not to walk dogs during the hottest parts of the day and to check pavements to prevent paw burns.

Emergency services have also raised concerns over the increased risk of wildfires due to dry ground conditions. People are urged to avoid lighting barbecues in open spaces and to follow local fire safety advice.

While temperatures are expected to ease slightly from Sunday onwards, conditions are set to remain warm into next week.
