It doesn’t happen often in the off season, but I’ve actually got some important news for you all this week.

Due to the current situation, all of our Norwest Bowls Club meetings have been cancelled.

This includes the AGM, which is the meeting where we select our new club officers and committee for the following season, and, as I know many of you were queuing up to volunteer, I’m sure you’ll all be very disappointed.

After some discussion, and not a little elbow twisting, all our officers and committee members have agreed to stay on in their present roles for another year.

Hopefully, this will be acceptable to all members. If you have any problems with this decision or comments, please can you ring our Club President, Brian, on: 01761 479310.

My second bit of information is about ‘our’ Kath. During lockdown she’s been busy with her sewing machine making masks, which she sold for £2 each, and she managed to raise the incredible amount of £400 for Dorothy House. That’s a lot of masks – you do the maths!

Fantastic work, but she’s not finished yet, oh no! Now she’s raising much-needed funds for our club, and yes, it’s out with the sewing machine again for more masks, but this time she’s going festive.

So, what better way to cheer up the end to what has been a very difficult year but to don a Christmas mask to go with your Christmas jumper. If you’re interested, give her a bell and get your order in quick, because I think she’s going to be very busy yet again.

Now for a little news about our young bowlers. On Sunday, we went to Taunton Deane for the opening meeting of the Somerset Under-25’s indoor season.

Although, obviously, things were a bit different this year, thanks to the staff at Taunton Deane who organised everything brilliantly, and the dedication of Brian Cracknell, the team manager, we were able to delight in watching our young hopefuls having a great time playing a game which they all seem to love.

Who said bowls was an old person’s sport? Our local youngsters, Cameron, Chloe, Jack and Sam did us proud, they are a credit to the dedicated team at Purnell, who put them through their paces each Saturday morning.

Well done to all of you. Keep up the good work!
