Well, you can tell the end of the season is nigh. No matches to report on, but plenty still going on with the competitions.
Tuesday and Wednesday saw six teams compete in the Janet Norman Trophy. The final was played between Bob Jenner, Julie MacFarlane and Roger Meadows, who played Janet Andrews, Sue Meadows and Sheila Davis, with Sheila’s team coming away as the winners.
Saturday was the first day of Finals Weekend. The weather forecast was not good, but the first game, The Club Triples, was played in atrocious weather, with Carole Jenner-Timms, Stewart MacFarlane and Thelma Chun beating Julie MacFarlane, Sue Burke and Sheila Davis. The rest of the matches were postponed and agreed to play later in the week.
Sunday started off better, weather-wise. Alan Scott beat Steve Watson in the Novices cup. Next was the Over-70s, where Doug Ball beat Thelma Chun. In the Open Championship, Dave Yarlett beat Carole Jenner-Timms. Dave Yarlett was out on the green again, this time in the Men’s pairs, with partner, Mike Satterthwaite, who beat Stewart MacFarlane and Dave Cocks in a very close game.
After a short rest, Dave was back in action with wife, Sue, in the Ladies’ Invitation pairs, but they were beaten by Steve Watson and Anne Morgan. Thanks must be given to Dave Yarlett for organising these competitions – not an easy task, with some of the competitors pulling out through ill health. Also great thanks to Carole Cocks, Sue Yarlett, and Julie MacFarlane for keeping everyone well fed and watered on both days.
The outstanding games will be played on Monday and Tuesday of next week. This week will see the Monday Nights Triples Final, and on Thursday and Friday, the Allan Hobbs Cup. Then on Sunday is Captain’s Day. Please come along and support Captain Dave on his special day.
Unless I can twist someone’s arm to report on the rest of the competitions and also Club Triples, you will have to wait a few weeks, as yours truly is fleeing the country in search of some sunshine.
