This year is the 30th anniversary of the Fosseway Bowls Club, making it the 30th time club championships have been played and settled.
Glorious weather made for some great bowling and produced record crowds watching during all sessions. In 1986, Clive Norman was our first ever Men’s Champion, so it was very fitting that this year, thirty years on, he became our Men’s Champion again. To watch Clive playing in the final was like rolling back the years! It was a good, hard fought game against one of our newer members, Mike Poulter, but Clive was just that little bit more consistent and was a worthy winner.
Molly Bowring became our Ladies’ Champion for the fifth time, overcoming a very determined and formidable opponent, Thelma Chun.
Celia Soby and Tony Cooper have only lost one game in the ten years that the Two Wood Pairs competition has been in existence, so were hot favourites to win this final. However, the Dynamic Chuns, Thelma and Mike, had different ideas, and beat the current champions in straight sets. Unfortunately for Sue Burke and Bob Jordan, this meant Celia and Tony came out fighting in the next Final, The Invitation Pairs, and fairly quickly disposed the opposition.
Dave Yarlett, together with Richard Andrews, won the Men’s Pairs and the two of them, with Ted Davis, won the Open Triples title.
Dave Yarlett was again involved in the Open Championship Final and the 101 Final, both games against Tony Cooper, with Tony winning both in two very close games.
The Ladies’ Two Wood was a brilliant game and went all the way with Carole Jenner-Timms just beating Sue Burke on the last end.
Mike Poulter, as a warm-up before playing in the Men’s Final, played in the Novices’ Final against Stewart MacFarlane, who was playing in his first ever Singles Final and although Stewart played well, Mike was a well-deserved winner.
Ray Soby won the Over-70s Championship and that completed the Finals programme for another year.
