Like the weather, this week has been a pretty dismal one for Norwest’s bowlers. As far as our Ladies are concerned, it’s a case of the least said, the better.

They had two Wild League games, both away – one to Street and the other to Shepton Mallet – and from both, we returned with no points and licking our wounds. The only bright spot on the horizon is that it can’t get any worse next week, can it?

Our Men fared a little better, when the A team played Frome Selwood at home in their County League East game on Saturday, as they actually managed to score four of the 12 points on offer. Unfortunately, the B team followed the Ladies’ lead, and returned from their League game away to Bath B, with their tails between their legs and no points.

Sunday, with the weather still against us, we welcomed our old friends from Paulton to our green for a rather soggy friendly, and although it rained for most of the afternoon, it couldn’t dampen our spirits. It was a really friendly and fun game, with lots of laughter both on and off the green.

After the game we were treated to a super tea of sandwiches, pizza and delicious homemade cakes, courtesy of Shirley and Merv. Thanks to you both, great job and thanks also to all who helped behind the bar, especially to new recruit Aaron. Last but not least, we have to thank the bowlers from Paulton, whose company made it such an enjoyable game. And the cherry on the cake? We won!

For those of you who are following ‘our Aaron’s’ progress in the County Unbadged competition and plan to cheer him on at Wyrall Park, the date for the next round – the semi-final – has been changed, and by the time you read this, the game will have been played. This is due to the fact that his opponent, G. Perkins from Castle Cary, could not make the original fixture. Hopefully, next week, I’ll have some good news to report on this.

This week we see the start of the Floodlight Charity Bowls league, a sure sign that the season is nearing its end. This inter-club league between our local clubs and two Frome clubs is always popular, and a great excuse for the lads to meet up for a few bevvies, a lot of banter, and a friendly game of bowls. This year, the charities which the league will be supporting are the Blue House Sheltered Housing Association, and Friends of Frome Hospital.
