Our Ladies still support all the other teams in their two leagues, by remaining firmly on the bottom and this week has been no exception. Their first game was in the North Somerset League, on Tuesday, when they welcomed Purnell Ladies to our green and although, true to form, our ladies lost, a great afternoon was enjoyed by all.

The second game, a Wild League game against Shepton Mallet, unfortunately had to be cancelled as we couldn’t raise a team.

On Thursday, we will be going to Bath to play our last game of the season, which I’m sure will be enjoyable, even if the outcome may well be a foregone conclusion!

My other news this week is much more exciting. Monday evening saw the County Patrons gather at Norwest to compete in the annual battle for the Len Hilleard Trophy. As usual, it was a great game with lots of banter, both on and off the green.

Last year, the game was drawn, but Norwest retained the trophy as winners the previous year, but this year we won it on merit by fourteen shots. However, Patrons’ Chairman, Barrie Davis, pointed out that we need to win it a few more times to overtake their previous winning run.

After the game, we all enjoyed a superb supper of cold meats, salad and new potatoes followed by fruit pie and ice cream, for which we owe thanks to Mary Coombes and her team of Sue Nott, Joan Hancock, Doris Kingman and Kath Hillman.

We also need to thank Brian and all his helpers for their stirling work behind the bar.

The good news continued on Thursday, when Norwest hosted the Floodlight Charity Bowls final. The two teams competing in this year’s final were the chaps from Purnell and our very own Norwest lads.

As you can imagine, being two local teams, there was a great deal of rivalry and the whole game was well-fought, but for the second time this week, Norwest claimed the trophy, winning on four of the five rinks.

Well done lads and a big thank you to everyone who came along to support the players and eat my pasties and hot dogs. Thanks also to all who had a go on our tombola, which raised a further £300 to go in the charity pot.

Overall, it’s been an extremely exciting week and over the weekend there have been many nail-biting games as members played out the finals of their club competitions, but it’s also a little sad to think that there’s only one more week until Captains’ Day, after which the green will be tucked up for the winter.

I still can’t get over how quickly this season has gone by.
