Wow, what a turnaround for our Ladies. After a very poor start to the season, this week, things have looked up no-end, and our girls have claimed victory in two of this week’s three games, with the third yet to be decided.
On Tuesday, it was a Wild League game against local friends and rivals from Paulton, and, after a hard-fought game, our girls won by three shots, giving us ten of the twelve points on offer – something which I’m sure Paulton Ladies will seek to avenge when we meet them again in July.
We had two North Somerset League games this week: the first was on Wednesday, when the Ladies from Keynsham joined us on our green, and this time our girls won by a more comfortable margin of twelve shots and claimed an 8-2 victory.
The game on Thursday was away to Bloomfield, but unfortunately, after twelve ends, the heavens opened and the game had to be abandoned, as flood water on the green made play impossible, meaning some very wet and bedraggled bowlers took an early tea. This means that our girls will have to venture forth once again to Bloomfield at a later date to play the final nine ends, and maybe get to enjoy yet another cuppa.
Now for the Lads: it was a busy day at Norwest on Wednesday. As soon as the Ladies vacated the green, the Lads started to arrive for their Mid-Somerset League game. It has to be said, that this caused some chaos in the car park, but eventually things settled down, and the game began. As with the Ladies, this game was against local rivals, but this time it was a head-to-head with the chaps from Fosseway. The result was a great win for our boys, who took the whole sixteen points on offer.
Another great result for the Lads came on Thursday evening, when they played their Round One game in the National Two-Rink competition against a City of Wells team, and won. In the next round, the boys will be meeting Prattens, yet another local team!
After all this excitement, it was nice for our Lads to just enjoy a friendly game on Saturday, when they welcomed the Lads from Winscombe to our green. It was a super-friendly game, thoroughly enjoyed by all judging by the banter both on the green and afterwards in the clubhouse: even if our lads did lose, it didn’t really matter, and they’ll have the opportunity to set it straight when they play the return game later in the season.
And finally, the Mixed Mid-Somerset League game on Friday. After a morning of heavy showers, when we all expected a phone call to tell us the game was cancelled, the sun decided to put in an appearance and settled in to give us a really warm and sunny evening for our game, which was played away at Weston Bath.
It was one of those games when the luck wasn’t with us – well on my rink it wasn’t! – and I lost count of the number of times I heard “unlucky” shouted out as yet another Norwest wood sailed past the jack. Consequently we lost 4-8, but we didn’t disgrace ourselves as it was only by six shots.
