Still battling with the heat, our ladies kicked off the week on Tuesday by travelling to Frome Park for a Wild League game. The green, to say the least, was challenging and certainly favoured the home team, leaving our girls with only one of the 12 points on offer.
The heat continued when on Thursday the Ladies from City of Wells joined us at Norwest for yet another Wild League game, but this time it wasn’t only the weather that was sizzling, as our girls won the whole 12 points. Wells are an extremely competitive club, which was maybe why the team captain has promised to ‘exact her revenge’ when we meet them again on Tuesday.
A second contest against Frome, but this time it was the lads who welcomed Frome Selwood to our green for an MSL game, the final one of the season. The heat was still on and our lads won 14-2, by a scorching 37 shots.
And then it rained! I know we’ve been moaning about the heat and I know the green and gardens need it, but did it have to be quite such a downpour?
It certainly left our lads scrabbling for ‘wets’ that have remained firmly in their bowls bags so far this season and to say the rest of the week was a bit of a washout would seem to be an understatement.
In the County League East competition, both the A and B team suffered losses. The A team were away to Stothert and Pitt, losing 1-11, by seven shots, while the B team played at home against Keynsham and they lost 4-8, this time by four shots.
Sunday and no sun specs or sun hats were in evidence as we boarded the coach for our away day to Poole: just rain coats and brollies. And boy, did we need them! The rain did not let up all day, resulting in the game being cancelled. So what to do? A long lunch with a few bevvies, a little shopping and an early departure, feeling thoroughly wet, bedraggled and somewhat fed up. Thanks to all who organised the trip, it’s definitely one which will be remembered: and a special mention for Bill, our driver, from John Martin coaches, who remained cheerful all day, whilst battling the windy conditions, huge puddles and constantly swishing wipers. Thanks Bill, you did a great job.
Now for the Fun Day. It’s this coming Sunday, 5th August, at Norwest Bowls Club at 2.30 p.m. There will be lots of fun games, nothing too serious, a tombola and a cake stall. Harold will be cooking up a storm on the barbie and of course the bar will be open. So come on, gather up your friends, relatives, neighbours and anyone else you can think of and come and join us. I’ve ordered the sun, Harold has ordered the burgers, Brian’s stocked up the bar, so all we need is you!
