This week Norwest mourns another member, with the death of John Doughty. John was a long-standing member of Norwest and dearly loved his bowls.

He was always cheerful and you could always rely on John for words of advice and encouragement, especially for our newer members. We will miss him greatly, and our thoughts and love go to John’s wife, Doreen, and his family at this sad time. John’s funeral will be at Bath Crematorium on Monday, 1st July at 11 a.m.

It has been not the best of weeks as far as bowls was concerned, for although we started off well with our Men beating the chaps from Paulton, 16-0, in an MSL game on Wednesday, that is where the good news ends. In the National competitions, we lost our Top Club game 3-2 against St Anne’s Park, and Aaron and Dave are both out of the singles competition. Never mind, Lads – you did your best and there’s always next year.

On Friday evening we went to Purnell for an MMSL fixture, and we were extremely lucky with the weather, if not the game. Amazingly, after a wet start to the day (and even though some very black clouds were in evidence) we actually managed to play the whole game dry. It was a friendly game, except for Colin and Hughie on my rink, who gave me no end of trouble, and with only seven shots difference, I consider Norwest unlucky to only get two of the twelve points.

Things changed dramatically on Saturday, when we went to Weston, Bath for a friendly game – the heavens opened and we all got thoroughly drenched. We did manage to play twelve ends before we abandoned the green and retired to the clubhouse for tea. I won’t mention the score, but suffice it to say we well and truly lost!
