More sad news came last week with word of the death of Margaret Williams.
Many of our newer members won’t know Margaret, as she hasn’t played for some time due to ill health, but Margaret was one of our long-standing and much-loved Lady bowlers and a past President. She was a lovely lady, gentle and kind, with a great sense of humour. We have many fond memories of her at Norwest. Our thoughts go to her family at this sad time.
Our Ladies had only one game this week, and to say it was a washout would be an understatement! It was a Wild League game against the Ladies of Frome Selwood, which we started with a minute’s silence to remember Margaret. After this, the game seemed to progress quite nicely until the heavens opened. Within minutes the green was underwater and completely unplayable, so the girls repaired to the clubhouse for tea and cake, declaring the game a draw.
Our Men played two friendlies this week: the first on Wednesday when they visited Paulton for a triples game, which they won with a scoreline of 84-55. The second game was once again away but this time at Keynsham and again they won, this time with a score of 87-58.
On Friday, we played a mixed MSL game which we played away at Bath. We were extremely lucky with the weather, getting only slightly damp at the beginning, and it certainly didn’t seem to dampen our spirits as there was plenty of friendly rivalry on the green.
With our two clubs’ Men’s teams, Norwest A and Bath B, vying for promotion to the Premier County League next season, and with only one point between them, you can imagine there was a great deal of banter in the clubhouse after the game. However, the honours for the night went to Bath as they claimed ten points while Norwest only got the remaining two.
Sunday saw players gather at the clubhouse for the Monica Trophy game. Once again, conditions were rather damp, with lots of thunder and dark clouds overhead. Nonetheless, our fearless bowlers ventured out on the green for what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. We even saw the sun before the end of the game!
Thanks to Brian for his organisational skills, his assistant, me, and Mark for manning the bar. Our two finalists were Graham Walkington and Nigel Vine, and after a tight-fought competition, Nigel won the day. Congratulations to Nigel and well done to everyone who turned up.
