It’s been a hectic week for us Norwesters, with the end of the season fast approaching.
Members are busy finishing off their club competition games, while with the Charity League under way and the skittle season starting, there hasn’t been much time for relaxing.
Our Ladies have completed all their games in the Wild League, but still have a few more North Somerset games to play – after a somewhat hard season, they remain amongst the bottom teams in both Leagues. In our defence, I have to say we have struggled to raise teams, and I’d like to thank our new girls for stepping in to the breach in their very first season.
It’s been very different for the lads: our A Team narrowly missed promotion after a nail-biting finish with Bath B, who just pipped them at the post for promotion to the Premier League. The B Team struggled a bit but they pulled out all the stops, and with a final flourish managed to avoid relegation. So well done to our lads and good luck to Bath B for their next season up with the big boys.
The Charity League is now well under way, and, as usual, the atmosphere on the green is brilliant. Whether it’s the flood lights which cast a glow over the proceedings I don’t know, but the warmth and camaraderie during these games is amazing.
Our lads have played two games this week, drawing on Thursday against Prattens and winning on Friday against Frome PS. They are nicely placed in the League, but with no more games to play their final position is now in the lap of the gods. The Final will be held at Norwest on Thursday, 12th September, so if you’d like to come along, have a few bevvies, a hot dog or pasty and support the finalists, you’ll be very welcome.
With the season almost at an end we start on the winter programme of skittles and social evenings. We have three teams in the Paulton and District League, and this year we welcome the Golden Girls in the local Ladies’ League to our club. As usual, Fridays will see the start of the Fish and Chip League run by Keith and Dennis. It’s a fun social evening where all are welcome to come along and enjoy a drink and friendly banter – you don’t have to be a skittler!
Now, I’m after some help. Brian and myself are doing our usual ‘Stepping into Christmas’ evening on 30th November, but we really need some fresh ideas for some other evenings. Can you think of something we could do, or even better, how about doing something yourself? These evenings can be great fun but it always seems to be the same people who run them. So come on, how about it! Surprise me and let’s see what you can do.
