It’s been a week of ups and downs for Norwest, with several games lost but some great wins. As usual, it’s the Ladies first. On Tuesday, they welcomed the Ladies from Frome Selwood to our green for a Wild League game on a lovely, sunny afternoon. However, at the end of the game, the mood wasn’t so sunny for our Ladies, as they lost 12–0.
There was another Wild League game at home on Thursday, this time, our opponents were Wyrall Park and the result of 9–3 in favour of Norwest put the smiles back on our girls’ faces.
Our lads also started the week off with a loss on Wednesday, when they played against Purnell in the MSL final. Our lads fought valiantly, but with Purnell pulling out all their big guns, and on their own green, the result wasn’t a surprise.
On Saturday, it was away to Winscombe for a Friendly game, although I’m not sure if Winscombe understand the concept of ‘friendly’, as they beat the lads by 51 shots.
Now to Sunday, and the lads’ third game of the week – the really important one – and yes, it was third time lucky. This was the Semi-Final game in the Wedmore Plate competition, which was played at Keynsham against Yatton and we won! This means that the boys are through to the final, which will be played at Bath on Sunday, September 3rd at 10 a.m.
The saga of ‘our Aaron’ and his County competitions continues: first, in the Unbadged competition, the game against Richard Brimble, which was due to be played on the 18th, was rearranged and they played it last Monday. Aaron won through with a great 21–4 victory, and he will now play in the Semi-Final at Wyrall Park on August 27th.
Secondly, the Open Champions competition, which was played on Thursday against Chris Spurrey. It was a hugely entertaining game, with Aaron fighting all the way, but Chris claimed the game and will now go into the Semi-Finals, for which we wish him luck.
To round the week off, members gathered at the green for our annual Monica Trophy competition. Brian was in charge for this two wood, round robin type competition, where members pit themselves against each other. In this year’s Final, Steve Curtis met his nemesis in the form of Martin Tincknell, whom he’s lost to on many occasions. This time, however, it was a different outcome, and Steve triumphed to become this year’s Monica trophy winner. Well done, Steve.
