The past couple of weeks have seen Paulton Bowls Club enjoy probably the best period of results for a few seasons.
The Mixed team was involved in two friendly matches, one against a strong Wedmore team and the other against Keynsham. The Wedmore game saw Paulton’s rink of Colin and Annabelle Curtis, Daphne Dodgson and Dave Ball win by fourteen shots to set the club on their way to a convincing 97–65 winning score line. The very next day, a high-scoring rink of Roger Lucking, Daphne Dodgson, Joyce Denning and Martyn May flew to a 32–7 win to help the club to a 91–46 scoreline. Even though the scores were heavily in Paulton’s favour, the games were played with plenty of friendly banter on both sides, followed by some excellent refreshments afterwards.
The Ladies’ section currently seems to be on an unstoppable roll. They are the form team of the Wild League, with five victories from their last six games. The last victory came this last week; this time against Norwest’s Ladies. Only a huge effort from Norah Holmes’s Norwest rink, on the last end, denied Paulton Ladies all of the points, but it was another victory for Pat Stock’s team, by ten points to two.
It has not been the best of seasons for Paulton’s Men’s team, but last Saturday saw a much-needed victory for them in the County League. There was only one rink lost, as the team ran out comfortable winners against Imperial by 64 shots to 54. The team has been winning a number of rinks in each match this season, but this is the first time that they have gone on to convert the chances into a win. Two more victories like this, against fellow league strugglers, Alexandra and Stothert and Pitt, might well see the Men avoid relegation. We shall see!
