Another milestone was achieved by the Men at Purnell Bowls Club last Wednesday, playing Norwest in the final of the Mid-Somerset League.
After winning the Mid-Somerset Central League for the second year running, it was the cup final of the league last Wednesday, against local rivals Norwest.
The teams playing in this competition are the three league winners, and the best runners-up out of the three Mid-Somerset Leagues.
Purnell got through by beating Wyrral Park Glastonbury, and Norwest by beating the heavily-fancied Bath.
On the night, the Purnell lads won on all rinks, taking the title for the first time in thirty years.
The final was played between two local rivals, but although being competitive, it was played in the right spirit.
League secretary Peter Marks thanked everyone for taking part, and Purnell for hosting the final. League President, David Lake, presented the winner’s cup to Purnell President and Captain, Bryn Hawkins, and the finalist cup to Norwest President, Eddie Nott.
On Saturday, the A team were hoping to keep up with the pacemakers in the Somerset Premier League. Having their last home game of the season against Taunton, it was not to be, as they won on just one rink, losing on the other two points 2-10.
When the results came out on the Sunday morning, what a surprise – top team Ilminster lost 10-2 to Watchet, and third-place team Bath lost to one of the bottom clubs, Bloomfield, 10-2, so it’s ‘as you were’ in the league.
With just three games to go, Purnell A are still in with a chance of winning the Premier One Division – but they are certainly going to have to do it the hard way, with away games at Clevedon, Bristol and Bath.
