The Ladies of Purnell Bowls Club have turned their fortunes around with two fine wins in the past week. Firstly, in the Wilde League against Norwest by one shot, and then a good result against a strong Keynsham side in the County Southey Trophy, winning by four shots.

The Men, meanwhile, started the Mid-Somerset League with a fine win against Fosseway, winning on three rinks, gaining fourteen points. In the Somerset County League, the A team lost away to Street by seven shots, winning on one rink. The B and C sides continued with their good start to the season, with the B team beating Weston Bath by a massive 51 shots for twelve points, and so lead the East One League. The C team gained a 34-shot win over Frome Park B, likewise taking all twelve points, and are now in second spot in the East Two League.

In the National Competitions, the Men took part in the first round of the Double Rink competition, entering two teams. Both teams played teams from Bloomfield, Bath, with mixed fortune. The A team won with John Challenger’s last wood, winning the game. Unfortunately, the B team were not able to copy the A team and lost. In the National Pairs, the pairing of Brian Wyatt and Jim Towells, plus the pairing of Don Dart and Hugh Lorimer, progressed to the fourth round, but unfortunately have to play each other in the next round. In the National fours, the teams of Terry Priddle, Paul Curtis, John Matthews and Steve Amor plus the team of Jim Towells, Don dart, Denis Skehan and Hugh Lorimer had good wins to progress to round five.

On Friday evenings, the Club Triples League is proving popular, especially with cooked refreshments afterwards, so we invite anyone who would like to give this very social-yet-competitive sport a go to come along next Friday, or contact Jan Dart on: 01761 471019. Failing that, visit our website: www.purnellbowls.co.uk for more details.
